History

U-Flotilla "Weddigen"* was founded on 27 Sept 1935 under the command of Fregkpt. Karl Dönitz, the later BdU. In June 1941 the flotilla moved to Brest (France). Its history ended in Sept 1944 when it was disbanded.

* Kptlt. Otto Weddigen was during WWI Commander of the U-boat UB-9, which sank on the 22 Sept, 1914 the 3 British cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue (each vessel was 12,200 tons). In this single day Otto proved what a deadly weapon submarines could be. He died on 18 March, 1915, when his U-29 was rammed by the British battleship HMS Dreadnought in the North Sea.
